"Today, let's try drawing life-sized yokai (Japanese supernatural creatures) with ink.
Have you thought about it beforehand?"
The class began with these words.
The artists for this session were two individuals from Todaiji Welfare and Rehabilitation Hospital.
Both were enthusiastic, saying, "We've thought about it!"
First, Aika gave a lecture on how to use ink.
They put water in the inkstone and slowly ground the ink.
And then, finally!
With a large sheet of paper, perfectly sized to their height, in front of them,
they challenged themselves to express their ideas with ink and brushes.
Both of them usually use wheelchairs,
so this was their first time drawing on such a large scale on the floor with brushes.
When they had difficulty holding the brush, they asked the nurses for assistance,
and boldly continued drawing.
Sweating and working hard,
their life-sized original yokai were completed!!!
Both looked very satisfied.
These large works were unveiled at the "Todaiji Monomon Exhibition" held at Todaiji Temple. The performance was incredibly impressive, and the audience was amazed by the unique concept.
